Publishing House Profile
Interdisciplinarity and practical relevance characterize the scientific publishing program of the Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag.
Concerning the subjects Law, Economy, Politics, Sociology, History and Philosophy, the BWV applies itself to those fields of research that cannot be assigned to traditional academic disciplines. They require transdisciplinary approaches and support a creative exchange of research results of the participating departments: Peace Studies, Security Policy, Environmental and Energy Policy, Public Administration and Public Economy, Cultural Studies, Contemporary History, Consumer Protection, Political Science, European Integration, Communication Studies and Futurology.
As a publishing house with humanistic approach based in Berlin, the BWV also publishes the results of the Brandenburg-Prussian and the Berlin historical research, concentrates on coming to terms with the DDR past and publishes those series of research institutions, commissions and archives that deal with this topic. Due to the fact that the universities, senior technical colleges and academies located in Berlin and Potsdam are situated in our immediate neighbourhood, a pooled description of Berlin as a centre of science and research with its affinity to Central and Eastern Europe as well as to the Baltic Sea area with its Nordic riparian states is made possible.
The practical approach of the scientific publications is guaranteed because many books are published by or in cooperation with practicians in politics, economy and law. Empirical analyses are completed by manuals and materials for further education. Lifelong learning becomes a core area for all humanistic subjects.
Twelve journals add to the about 150 new publications per year and facilitate the professional communication among authors, research institutions and readers.
The program of the Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag on the internet
In recent years, digitalization has gained more and more dynamic forces in the book industry. More and more contents are available on the internet and also readers are searching every more often online after contents.
Since September 2006, the Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag takes part in all significant platforms on the Internet in order to take advantage of the synergies of the electronic medium – under full reserve to the rights and the data sovereignty of the publishing house and therefore the authors.
1) With libreka! as a project of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels emerges at present an industry platform for digital contents. On the libreka! platform, entire book contents are worldwide as full texts on the Internet determinable and as e-books available. Thus, the access to the contents is optimised and at the same time the distribution of the book in its classic, printed form is supported. By now, about 600 publications of the BERLINER WISSENSCHAFTS-VERLAG are available on the libreka! platform. Additionally, the supply of e-books on the website of the BERLINER WISSENSCHAFTS-VERLAG and the corresponding accounting modes will be available with libreka! as central database until the end of 2009.

2) The best-known internet provider for books, movies and CDs, AMAZON, on whose platform the BERLINER WISSENSCHAFTS-VERLAG is present with more than 1,900 publications, offers with its “Search-Inside-the-Book”-program (SITB) the possibility of searching after key words in the running text of the books. Readers are able to investigate the books considering a particular search item. The contents of the books re-main protected – they are neither storable nor reproducible. The aim of full-text digitalization is not the utilization of the digital contents themselves (e-books), but a content-related decision support for the purchase of the book in its printed form.

SUBITO offers a quick and uncomplicated service – the libraries scan articles published in printed magazines or journals and send a copy of these to the reader. The bases of this service are the collections in the archives of the participating libraries. Regardless of the customer’s place of residence, everyone who needs the literature for studies, research, teaching, etc, can contact a library or SUBITO itself. Billing takes place on the basis of a licence fee, differentiated according to user group by SUBITO.
